When did bed valances become a thing?

Historically, valances were used to conceal unsightly box springs and unappealing bed posts, a purpose similar to contemporary ones that often hide stored items under the bed and the occasional pesky dust bunny.

It was soon realised that these versatile valances also helped prevent cold drafts in winter, which tended to chill the bed from the ground up. Furthermore, households with bed valances noticed fewer issues with bed bugs and dust mites. This is logical as the valance material can repel dust that tends to accumulate under beds. And that's how the valance became a popular choice!

Modern beds can be very stark. Sometimes called a bed skirt, a valance is like a finishing touch for a bed. And as we make them to fit perfectly, you can have a valance on any size bed.
