Roman blinds – should they be positioned inside or outside window recesses? Let’s see what our Boeboes experts recommend

“Where you choose to position your blinds comes down to your personal choice, but here are a few of our pointers about logistics, light leakage and aesthetics to help you along your way:
(The ‘window recess’ is the area between the window frame itself, and the inside wall of your home. The window is fitted into the sides of the recess. Roman blinds can be hung either inside or outside of this recess.)

Outside recesses are recommended for:
• Smaller windows to avoid blocking daylight when blinds are folded away.
• Windows that open inwards rather than outwards - to ensure they can be opened without obstruction.

Other points to consider when selecting outside recesses:
• When the blinds are opened, the full window and view are revealed without any obstruction from the folds of the fabric.
• Minimal light leakage around the blind edges.
• Attaching them to a batten for support makes the working environment easier potentially.
• Aesthetically, you might catch a glimpse of the back of the blind and lift cords from the side depending on your room layout and angle, but for most people it's not bothersome.

Considerations for hanging Roman blinds in inside recesses:
• The blind creates a smaller footprint, giving a neater appearance as the blind is tucked away.
• Hanging them may be a little more awkward as there’s a more limited area to work and to angle tools within.”
